Tracking Nurse and Doctor Shift Attendance in a Nigerian Hospital

Hospitals run around the clock, with day, evening and night shifts that overlap at handover. Here is how hospitals and clinics record who was on duty, who came late and who stayed on, shift by shift.

A hospital roster is only as good as the record of who actually turned up. Paper sign-in books get filled in after the fact, and one person signing for another is a known problem. See ghost workers and proxy sign-ins.

Shifts the way hospitals run them

Set up your real shifts, for example Day 8am to 4pm, Evening 4pm to midnight, Night midnight to 8am, or longer overlapping shifts. Staff tap their SmartAccess card when they arrive and leave, and each tap is matched to the right shift automatically.

  • Night shifts that end the next morning are counted as one shift. See night shift attendance.
  • Staff who arrive early for handover are counted for their own shift with Early Check-in.
  • Lateness is measured against each person's own shift start.
  • Anyone who forgets to tap out is closed at their shift's end with automatic check-out.
  • Extra time after a shift only counts once a manager approves it. See overtime approval.

Who was on duty at 3am?

Every tap is saved with the time, so the hospital can answer that question from the record, not from memory. Attendance exports to PDF and spreadsheet for management and audits.

Questions people ask

How can a hospital track nurse shift attendance?

Set up the hospital's shifts in mySmartAccessCard and have staff tap a SmartAccess card when they arrive and leave. Each tap is matched to the right shift, including night shifts that end the next morning.

How do I stop proxy sign-ins in a hospital?

Replace the sign-in book with a personal card tap, so each check-in comes from the staff member's own card and is saved with the exact time.
