How to Track Night Shift Attendance That Runs Past Midnight
A night shift that starts at 8pm and ends at 8am crosses two calendar days. Many attendance systems split it in two and lose the hours. Here is how mySmartAccessCard keeps a night shift as one shift, from the evening tap-in to the morning tap-out.
Night shifts break simple attendance systems. A nurse checks in at 7:55pm on Tuesday and checks out at 8:02am on Wednesday. A system that looks at one day at a time sees a Tuesday check-in with no check-out and a Wednesday check-out with no check-in. The night's twelve hours vanish from payroll, and the morning tap-out can even be recorded as a fresh arrival.
One night, one shift
mySmartAccessCard treats a shift whose end time is earlier than its start time, like 8:00pm to 8:00am, as a shift that crosses midnight. When a night worker taps their card the next morning, the app checks whether they are still checked in from last night's shift. If they are, that tap is their check-out, even if the Morning shift has already started.
| Time | Tap | Recorded as |
|---|---|---|
| Tue 7:51pm | Card tap | Check-in, Night shift, Early |
| Wed 7:58am | Card tap | Check-out of Night shift |
| Wed 8:10am | Card tap (if they forgot at 7:58) | Still the check-out of Night shift |
If they forget to tap out
With automatic check-out switched on, anyone still checked in from a night shift is closed at exactly the shift's set end time the next morning. The record is clearly marked as closed by the system, so nobody mistakes it for a real tap.
Hours and pay stay correct
Payroll pairs each check-in with its own check-out across midnight, so the full night is counted. The hours column on the dashboard shows the real length of the shift, not "in progress" forever.
Working a double shift
Someone who works Night and then stays for Morning simply taps out of Night and taps in again for Morning. Two taps, two shifts, each judged on its own.
Questions people ask
How do I record night shift attendance that ends the next day?
Set your Night shift with an end time earlier than its start time, for example 8:00pm to 8:00am. mySmartAccessCard treats it as one shift that crosses midnight, so the evening check-in and the morning check-out are paired together.
What happens if a night worker taps their card in the morning after the day shift has started?
If they are still checked in from last night, the tap is recorded as their check-out of the Night shift, not as a new arrival for the day shift.
Will a night worker be paid for the whole night?
Yes. Payroll pairs the check-in and check-out across midnight, so the full shift is counted.
